Getting Started With RSS Feeds

RSS is an XML-based format for sharing and distributing web content, such as news headlines or calendar items. Using an RSS reader, you can view data feeds from various Mines sources. For example, announcements posted on the Inside.Mines home page are available in RSS form here.

HOW DO I USE RSS?

RSS/News Aggregators (also called Readers) will download and display RSS feeds for you. A number of free and commercial News Aggregators are available for download.

Many aggregators are separate, "stand-alone" programs; other services will let you add RSS feeds to a web page or to an email client such as Mac Mail. Yahoo! users can add RSS feeds to your My Yahoo! page. Adding an RSS feed to an aggregator is often referred to as "subscribing" to the RSS feed. Many RSS aggregators will notify you when a subscribed feed receives a new news item.

Additionally, many browsers are able to display RSS feeds in human-readable format. Firefox 3+, Safari 3+, and Internet Explorer 7+ are all capable of parsing RSS within a browser window. Reading an RSS feed in a browser is not the same as subscribing to the feed.
