Mines has the highest asmissions standards of any public university in Colorado and among the highest of any public university in the nation. Nearly 13,000 students vie each year for the 950 spots in the freshman class.
The Mines curriculum is broad and rigorous with an emphasis on hands-on experieces and collaborative approaches to problem-solving. Featuring programs in applied sciences, earth sciences, engineering, mathematics and economics, Mines is focused on developing educational and research programs that address the world's critical needs. Students and faculty are advancing the frontiers of knowledge in areas including unconventional natural gas, solar materials, fuel cells, biofuels, advanced water treatment, gas hydrates, critical minerals, geothermal energy, subsurface hydrology, ferrous metallurgy, subsurface characterization, intelligent geosystems and high performance computing.
Complementing the university's solid academic mission is a robust student life experience with student government, athletics, recreational sports, Greek life, theme learning communitites within the residence halls and more than 170 student organizations.
