A study of the chemistry of the metallic elements. Emphasis is on the transition elements. The course opens with an introduction to Ligand Field Theory. After the first exam, papers from the current literature are used to focus on the chemistry and the compounds of the various transition elements. Class periods will often be discussions of these papers. Students may be asked to give oral reports on assigned papers. Students are expected to use standard inorganic texts and reference works, as needed, to supplement the literature readings. The second and third examinations will be based on the content of these assigned readings.
Because of its growing importance, the course will include an introduction to retrieval of information via the computer. There will be an introduction to CARL, to using Mosaic for searching the Internet, and to "ftp" for tranfering files.
