We calibrate models because field measurements of parameter values are not accurate reflections of the model scale properties. Field measurements of parameter values sample a variety of scales and time periods and interpretation errors. In contrast, field measurements of dependent variables, such as head, discharge and concentration, reflect the integrated influence of the parameter values and provide a representative measure of system behavior. Calibration of a model allows for adjustment of the parameters to accommodate an integrated interpretation of the system.
