EXPECTATIONS FOR EXAM I

• be able to summarize the major canons of the engineering code of ethics
• for any hydrologic system Or subset of such system: recognize the components of the water budget, estimate their magnitude, and balance the budget
• manipulate relationships between porosity (total & effective) - specific yield - specific retention - capillarity - storage coefficient AND estimate these items from material descriptions
• manipulate hydraulic conductivity units
• estimate effective hydraulic conductivity of a heterogeneous material
• identify situations in which Darcy’s law is valid
• be able to identify the values for terms of Darcy’s law in any setting and calculate any term once the others have been determined
• determine the value of hydraulic head in simple systems and relate this head to pressure
• interpret head distribution to identify ground-water flow patterns
• recognize what a given head measurement represents and know if it is appropriate for use in the analysis at hand
• know how to set up analytical solutions to the flow equations to represent a particular problem and calculate heads and flows
• be able to draw and interpret flow nets, and use them to evaluate pressure conditions and estimate volumetric flow through the system
• be able to construct a "natural" flow net from field head data
• be able to interpret ground-water flow conditions (recharge/discharge areas & flow patterns)
• use a flow net constructed from field head measurements to interpret conditions in a flow system (including multiple interpretations for non-unique situations)
• determine the volume of water released from storage for a given head change in confined and unconfined units
• understand the basis for the ground-water flow equations and the significance of simple boundary conditions including: constant head, no-flow, constant flux and phreatic surface

You may bring 3 pieces of paper with you to the exam with as much written on them as you wish, both sides, small print etc. Creating such a sheet helps you study and provides the equivalent of an "open-book" exam without the problem of spending too much time paging through the book.
