As the chair of the Colorado School of Mines' Assessment Committee for the past decade, I have been involved in a number of outcomes assessment activities. Some of the publications resulting from this activity can be found in my vitae on my web page. In addition, a website devoted to CSM assessment activities is currently under development and will be linked to this page when it is completed.
Recent assessment work:
I have been working with Dr. Ronald L. Miller of CSM to develop and test an assessment matrix for evaluating curricular programs and educational research projects. The matrix has been used in workshops to help various faculty groups around the country and internationally prepare their own evaluation plans. Versions of the matrix have been published in ASEE Prism, NSF educational project conference proceedings, and the Journal of Engineering Education.
NSF Action Agenda Grant
I am working with faculty from the University of Pittsburgh, Columbia University, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, the University of Washington, and the University of Texas-El Paso on an Action Agenda grant funded by the National Science Foundation. We are developing and piloting new methods and instruments for student outcomes assessment. I am particularly interested in qualitative assessment tools such as portfolios, journals, and performance assessment.
