Project Requirements (details to be covered in class)

The project will follow a Goal Directed Design (GDD) process.

The Design(35 points total)
DUE: All design reports due Monday November 6, hard copy, in class
NOTE: Only one copy of the design is needed per group

Initial Interview Writeup (10 points)
Relates to chapter 4.  Flexible format.  Needs to be detailed, focus on user goals.

Develop Personas (10 points)
Relates to chapter 5.  Should include at least one persona, more if needed.  Should identify behavioral variables and behavior patterns.  Should be in narrative form.

Develop Scenarios (10 points)
Relates to chapter 6.  Follow the steps listed in the textbook, turn in design sketches and key path scenarios.

Providing Customer Perspective (5 points)
So that all projects have actual customers, class members can fill that role for other project teams.  Must participate in initial interviews and final product evaluation. Points will be awarded when the projects are completed.  NOTE: Feel free to find "customers" outside of class; this just simplifies the process if you don't have other clients in mind.

The System (70 points)
DUE: First presentations on November 24
System Software (50 points)
Must be an effort worth 40% of course grade.  Classmates will help to evaluate.  Factors that add value are working with new technology (that is, new to you), creativity, added functionality beyond what is easily supported by GUI tools.

System Usability Test (10 points)
Should use at least one of the techniques described in class (some not covered in textbook)

The Presentation (10 points)
DUE: beginning November 29 or December 1, 2 presentations per day
This presentation consists of short demonstrations of the product, along with discussion of: how this product adheres to good UI principles, tools used, what was easy, what was difficult, lessons learned, etc.
Length: 20 minutes

The Paper
DUE: December 4, hard copy, in class
The Write Up (20 points)
Format varies based on 498/598 status.
Papers are to be written individually
MACS498: paper format like article for Dr. Dobb's or other technical/how-to journal. Focus can be the technology OR interesting aspects of user interface (probably along with how-to). Paper length: 1-1/2 to 3 pages, single-spaced, reasonable margins.
MACS598: paper format should be possible submission to HCI journal or conference. 3 to 4 pages, single-spaced, reasonable margins.

The Paper Review (5 points)
Everyone should participate in a review of one other group's paper.
Reviews should be done during the week of November 27 (or earlier, by agreement between reviewers and reviewees).
The review should be turned in along with the final paper (on December 4).
