Important Notes:

  • Bring your textbook to lab. Chapter 13 serves as a good reference for this lab.
  • Your pre-lab questions are due at the end of the lab period, and can be completed during the lab period.

For those students who were not able to obtain an HCl FTIR spectrum, here is a spectrum we took previously which you can use for the data analysis part of the lab.

Important Notes:

  • Bring your values for the Morse potential parameters (De, Re, and a) that you derived from last lab's spectroscopic data.

For those students who performed Spartan calculations on Cl2 , please use the following corrected values for the Morse potential parameters taken from Table 13.2 and Table 5.1 from McQuarrie:

  • De = 239.2 kJ/mol
  • Re = 1.99 Å
  • a = Sqrt( k / De) = 2.00 Å-1

instead of these incorrect values previously posted:

  • De = 2.5 x 10-3 eV
  • Re = 2.41 Å
  • a = 2.35 Å-1
