Dr. Hao Zhang

I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the Colorado School of Mines. I received the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of Tennessee Knoxville (UTK) in 2014, advised by Dr. Lynne E. Parker, who is current Assistant Director of Artificial Intelligence at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). I received the M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2009 and the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 2006.

At the Colorado School of Mines, I am Director of the HCRobotics Lab (Human-Centered Robotics Laboratory), and is directing PROGRESS (Program for Robotics Outreach on Gender and Racial Equity in School and Society). I am affiliated with the Mines Algorithmic Robotics Group.

Note: I am looking for highly self-motivated students who are interested in human-centered robotics. The successful candidates are expected to conduct research in multisensory perception, robot learning and adaptation, decision making to enable natural collaborative human-robot teaming in assistive robotics and field robotics applications. My research is focused on long-term collaborative autonomy. The objective is to integrate strengths of humans and robots working together for long periods of time (e.g., days, months, to lifetime) in novel, dynamic, time-critical, and hazardous/adversarial scenarios, such as in applications of search and rescue, robot-assisted inspection and repair, homeland defense and security, autonomous driving, and Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT). The research interests include peer-to-peer human-robot/swarm teaming, distributed collaborative mapping, multisensory perception, robot learning and adaptation, long-term autonomy, machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR).

My research and educational activities are currently supported by Metcalf Archaeological Consultants, Inc.
