Hours: Lectures and class presentations are scheduled 7-8 Tuesdays per semester between 9 and 9:50 a.m.  Schedule laboratory work in coordination with your project (PHGN481-2) adviser.

Content: Practice technical writing and communication. Practice giving oral presentation. Learn the fundamentals of scientific ethics, intellectual property (patents, copyrights, trade secrets), scientific method.

Goals: Communicate ideas and results to fellow students and researchers by means of written and oral presentations.

Prerequisites:  PHGN384 and PHGN326.  For PHGN471, the corequisite is PHGN481.  For PHGN472,  the corequisite is PHGN482.

Text: On Being a Scientist: Responsible Conduct in Research, by the National Academy of Sciences.

Format: 0.5 credit-hour of classwork and written assignments.

Requirements and Grading:

Attend class meetings and participate in class discussions.

Submit satisfactory written material when due.

Prepare clear, grammatical, organized professional reports.  Prepare professional tables and graphics. Use units, numbers correctly (SI symbols, significant digits, for example).  Written reports are evaluated primarily on the elements of technical writing, as opposed to the scientific content, but the scientific content must be clear.

Cite references correctly and in consistent format.
