UNIT 3 -- STEADY STATE ANALYTICAL FLOW MODELING:
Steady state analytical solutions are useful
for obtaining a first estimate of the behavior of some systems. Steady state
means that nothing is changing with time. There is no water moving into, or
out of, storage in the aquifer. Consequently, these solutions cannot provide
insight into how long it will take for a condition to be reached, they can only
reveal the nature of the equilibrium system.
The OBJECTIVE of UNIT 3 is for you to:
* BECOME FAMILIAR with some SIMPLE STEADY STATE ANALYTICAL SOLUTIONS
* UNDERSTAND the ASSUMPTIONS underlying some example solutions
* BEGIN to see how the MATHEMATICS and the PHYSICAL meaning of models correspond
* LEARN to REASON through SURPRISE RESULTS to determine if they are errors, useful, or a mathematical construct
* LEARN to MANIPULATE available SOLUTIONS to APPLY them to somewhat DIFFERENT SITUATION than they those for which they were originally deveolped
DISCUSSION
Study the basis for the steady state analytical solutions presented on the steady state analytical solution main page. Think about the underlying assumptions, the value of results obtained using these solutions and the errors that might be introduced by applying these solutions to a field problem. Then move on to undertake some interesting (and fun) calculations using these solutions in the exercises of Unit 3.
